Annuals

Florists all around the world adore them for their beautifully vibrant colors. Annuals complete their life cycle from seed to flower to seed in one year which means you will have to re-plant them year after year giving you an opportunity to change things up each year. Some popular annuals are Gerberas, marigolds and Impatiens, well known for their rich shades and continuous blooms.

There are 3 main types of annuals:

Hardy

Annuals like Forget-Me-Nots, Pansies and Bachelor’s buttons can withstand freezing cold temps.

If you are eager to get started in the garden then these are what you want to purchase. As soon as soil temps reach 40°F you can begin planting, although 50°F-60°F is ideal. You have to be careful not to plant hardy annuals too early or late as it will effect their chances of thriving.

Half Hardy

This type of annual is best planted and maintained indoors until early summer to protect them from any frost over that may happen. Half-hardy annuals will continue to grow until the first frost of the winter season. Contrary to what you might think, these plants are actually easy to grow.

Tender

Tender annuals are best planted once soil temperatures reach 55°f and the last frost has passed and can add contrast against more traditional plants you may have.
