Grasses

Grass grass grass. It’s everywhere. How much do you know about grass? If you are here that means you are looking for knowledge about either grass in general, or you are looking for information on a specific type of grass. Look no more; We have the answers.

Grass has 2 main growth patterns called “bunch” and “spreading”.

  • Bunch Pattern: Typically grows in clumps originating from one central crown and expands by growing new side shoots. This growing pattern does not fill in patches or dead areas.
  • Spreading pattern: Grass that grows using this pattern will spread and eventually fill in dead areas and surrounding bare spots, this is achieved by expanding through Rhizomes or Stolons. Rhizomes and Stolons are stems that grow horizontally on the ground or just below the surface and produce roots and shoots at nodes, which allows the plant to reproduce asexually and spread.

Grass growth habits.

Depending on where you live certain types of grass may be better suited for use.

If you live in the northern hemisphere you may want cool season grasses whereas if you live in the southern hemisphere you want warm season grass.

Cool season grasses are the most active in spring and fall. In the cold season if the ground freezes they will turn brown and become dormant, however, if the ground doesn’t freeze they may stay green all year. Most often the best temperature for growth is between 50°F and 65°F.

Warm season grasses tend to grow best at temperatures from 65°F and up. Below 65°f the plant begins to go dormant.
